Day Itinerary

Kilimanjaro Day Hike to Mandara Hut
MORNING

Drive to Marangu Gate & Rainforest Ascent

Your Kilimanjaro day trek starts with a morning pickup from your hotel by your expert guide from Nas Royal Safaris. Take in the scenic views on a comfortable drive winding through Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes, heading past coffee and banana farms toward the historic Marangu Gate (1,860m). After finalizing your park registration and permits, meet your team of mountain guides and step onto the legendary trail.

Begin your hike ascending into Kilimanjaro’s untouched montane rainforest zone. The well-maintained trail passes beneath an overarching canopy of ancient trees draped in moss, ferns, and exotic wildflowers. As you hike, enjoy the crisp mountain air and listen out for the sounds of vibrant birdlife and the playful chattering of blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys high up in the treetops.

AFTERNOON

Arrival at Mandara Hut & Maundi Crater Exploration

After a steady 3 to 4-hour trek, you will emerge from the deep forest canopy into a small clearing to find Mandara Hut (2,700m). This complex features a collection of wooden A-frame huts serving as the first overnight camp for multiday trekkers on the Marangu route. Take a well-earned break and enjoy a fresh picnic lunch provided by Nas Royal Safaris amidst the tranquil alpine surroundings.

Following lunch, take a short 15-minute side walk to the nearby Maundi Crater. This striking volcanic rim breaks through the edge of the forest to offer a panoramic view out over the sweeping plains of northern Tanzania, Lake Jipe, and the nearby borders of Kenya. On a clear afternoon, you may catch a breathtaking, unobstructed view of the snow-capped Kibo Peak rising gracefully into the blue sky before starting your descent back down through the rainforest.

EVENING

Descent & Return Journey

Follow the forest trail on a comfortable, downhill walk back toward Marangu Gate, taking roughly 2 to 3 hours. Say goodbye to your mountain team, collect your commemorative certificate of achievement at the park office, and hop back into your private vehicle.

Relax on the evening drive back to your hotel as the twilight sun sets across the horizon. You will arrive back in the evening, feeling refreshed by the mountain air and carrying unforgettable memories of hiking on Africa's highest peak with Nas Royal Safaris.
