Day Itinerary

Shira Plateau Day Hike - Mount Kilimanjaro
MORNING

Drive to Londorossi Gate & Shira Ridge

Your Kilimanjaro day trek begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel by your expert guide from Nas Royal Safaris. Embark on a highly scenic drive through the countryside toward the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro. Pass through fertile agricultural slopes, vibrant local villages, and deep montane forest zones before arriving at Londorossi Gate for registration and park permits.

Following registration, your 4x4 vehicle will navigate a steep, rugged track pushing up through the dense, pristine rainforest where black-and-white colobus monkeys are frequently spotted. The drive culminates at the Shira Barrier, positioned at a breathtaking 3,500 meters above sea level. Step out into the cool alpine air and stretch your legs as you prepare for an unforgettable trek across one of the mountain's oldest volcanic craters.

AFTERNOON

Trekking the Caldera & Shira 1 Camp

Begin your guided trek across the spectacular, sweeping moorland wilderness of the Shira Plateau. The landscape transitions into an otherworldly Afro-alpine desert environment, decorated with unique, prehistoric vegetation like giant senecios and lobelias. Follow the trail across the gently undulating caldera floor, heading toward Shira 1 Camp.

The hike provides dramatic, close-up vistas of the rugged Shira Cathedral, a striking spire of volcanic rock, as well as panoramic views over the vast Kenyan plains far below. If the afternoon mountain skies clear, you will be rewarded with the awe-inspiring sight of Kibo's snow-capped summit towering ahead. Enjoy a fresh picnic lunch provided by Nas Royal Safaris at a designated scenic spot on the plateau, soaking in the complete silence and immense beauty of Africa's highest mountain.

EVENING

Descent & Return Journey

In the late afternoon, complete your high-altitude exploration and hike back toward the waiting vehicle. Begin the comfortable drive descending back down the mountain slopes, observing the drastic transition of ecosystems from alpine tundra back to lush rainforests as the golden afternoon sun drops below the horizon.

You will arrive back at your hotel in the evening, thoroughly invigorated by the mountain air and carrying extraordinary memories of walking on the roofs of Mount Kilimanjaro with Nas Royal Safaris.
